FIELD BOTANY

Learning to identify the plants around us is not a topic covered in our education system. Most people don’t realize that knowledge of plants and how to identify them was integral to daily life for all of our ancestors no matter our background or family lineage. Unfortunately this skill has not been prioritized in our modern world. Many people speak of seeing a “sea of green” when looking at the forest and express feeling a bit overwhelmed trying to pick out and identify individual plant species. This class is designed to help participants overcome this feeling so they can meet and connect with the amazing species diversity around us.

In this class you will learn basic botany and how to approach plant identification with ample hands-on practice in the field to build confidence and proficiency. Trees, vines, shrubs, and herbs; in this class we will take it all in and even review the traits of common plant families so the class will be helpful wherever your travels take you. Recommended identification tools and resources will also be shared and discussed. This class is an excellent pairing with our Foraging Texas class offered next on March 17th.

Both, this class, and Foraging Texas: Common Edible & Medicinal Plants of Central Texas are taught by Earth Native’s resident plant and foraging expert Eric Knight, author of Foraging Texas, Texas’ best, and most user friendly, edible and medicinal plant field guide (our humble opinion). Autographed field guides will be available for purchase during registration.
